In tradition, the term of vertical integration, especially a whole process from product R&D to retail was used to describe a strategic application available to giant companies only. For instance, Steve Jobs of Apple had made himself one of the top legacies in business world along with the success of employing this strategy. Nevertheless, the maturity of internet service and web-retail business have been changing not only the style of business start-up but entrepreneur’s perspective regarding vertical integration strategy, which is no longer isolated to medium and small businesses. The aim of this lecture is to feature a big picture and outline of business model, from product research and development to web-retail for medium companies and start-ups. It includes two main parts: the first talks a good example of ‘from idea to net profit’, an award product of Clean Republic, and ‘Four Able Method’ of new product R&D developed by the presenter, Dr. Yong Hou; the second, as a case study, introduces the real application of vertical integration strategy has been practicing by lecturer and his partner in Clean Republic in internet era.


主讲人简介:


Dr. Yong Hou is the co-founder and Vice Present of Clean Republic LLC, with offices in Seattle, WA and Grand Forks, ND. The company focuses on developing alternative energy products such as rechargeable battery, electric bike conversion kits and small wind turbine. Yong has a BS in Electrical Engineering and a MS in Systems Engineering, and a PhD in Management Science. As an adjunct profession of University of North Dakota, he has not only taught multiple technology and management courses, published papers in academic journals, but personally invested and involved in many renewable energy projects. Yong Hou founded and managed a multimillion dollar computer service business in Shanghai in 1990’s, and was Vice President of Product Development at Neosonic Energy Corporation, a multinational Lithium battery cell manufacturer, until he moved back US and founded Clean Republic LLC with Michael Shope.
