Life in ESDES

Hi! My name is Gian Wahyudi, exchange student to ESDES in Lyon, France. To be honest, I chose ESDES as my destination without researching much about this university. I picked ESDES mainly because it is one of the grande ecoles, which means that the France government acknowledges it as one of the best business schools. The other reason was I want to be able to speak French. So, I arrived there early September 2009.

First thing I learned about this university is that it is right at the city center, very convenient to reach with every kind of transport (bus, tramway, metro). There are many restaurants with wide varieties (including McDonald, Subway – if you feel homesick) within 10 minutes walk. The pedestrian street/shopping center also starts from Place Carnot, which is just in front of the ESDES.

In ESDES, the double degree program was in International Business Program (IBP) department. There are two staffs (and Emily Schmidt, the Director) that mainly responsible for this program. They were very helpful with all student needs, including arranging the dormitory/apartment, university trips, students’ activities, as well as academic needs.

The program is international program (different from local), means that all of the classmates are coming from all over the world (27 countries this year), except for one country – France. At first, I was quite surprised because most of the students here are quite in young age (normally 3rd year undergraduate student), while there were only six graduate students. I also took some courses together with the undergraduate students.

The courses in ESDES have moderate difficulties, providing me the time to learn French language. ESDES helped me a lot by providing students with 4.5 hours French classes every week. After I finish my study in ECUST, I will also receive the degree equal to the French students who study in ESDES for 5 years.

Concerning the residence, the ESDES’s staffs gave me several choices. For future students, I would strongly suggest taking the university dorm. There are several choices from the low-priced room up to the expensive apartment. Some students find residences on their own due to the service fee. However, they have to take care everything by themselves, including rent, water and electricity bill, etc (most of the local people can only speak French).

Overall, I am quite satisfied with my one-year exchange in France. The peoples were nice, the foods were superb, and the country was amazing. For those students who want to experience French life, and meeting people from various countries, I would say ESDES is the right choice.
